Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered

Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered Preview

Pre-release guide. Facts will be rechecked after the November 3, 2026 launch.

This is a preview, not a scored review. The game is not out. What exists is a Summer Game Fest demo, a gamescom roster trailer, and a set of written hands-ons. IGN’s Will Borger played it at the Atari booth and came away sounding like a person who had been waiting for the roar in a hallway. GamingTrend called it the same fight with better lighting. TechRaptor framed it as the Blockbuster rental that actually deserved a second life. Those three notes agree on the important part: it still plays like Destroy All Monsters Melee.

What the press actually felt

Pipeworks is the original studio. That shows up in timing more than in marketing copy. Beams still charge. Buildings still become bats. The camera still has to lie a little when two 100-meter animals occupy one intersection. Unreal Engine 5 does the thing a remaster should do: skin, scales, and collapsing glass look like a 2026 product instead of a 480p memory. Borger’s line is the useful one — they did not just juice the resolution and call the city destroyed.

The hands-on argument: this still feels like the 2002 game, which is the compliment.

What is still unknown

  • Online quality. Nobody published a ping log.
  • Whether four-player net exists.
  • Steam recommended PC specs — only the minimum box is filled.
  • How greedy or generous the currency shop is.
  • Whether extra per-kaiju campaigns are deep or just eight-fight palettes.

Who should pre-order

Pre-order if 2002 Melee is a personal artifact and $30 is not a debate. Wait for the Steam demo if you only know GigaBash or the 2014 PS4 Godzilla and need to feel the jank. Skip if you wanted Monsterverse skins, 40 fighters, or a story mode with cutscenes. This is an arena brawler with a Vortaak excuse plot. The roster is twelve on purpose.

Original reception, for context

Metacritic sat at 73 for the GameCube original. IGN’s 8.4 and Game Informer’s 8/10 were the friendly notices. GameSpot’s 6.9 was the shrug. It sold well enough in the US to become the nostalgia object Atari is now banking on. A remaster that keeps 99% of that engine will inherit both the charm and the shallowness critics named in 2002. If you want depth, you will make it yourself with combat study and people.

FAQ

What is the IGN score?

There is no IGN review score yet. The June 2026 piece is a preview. Do not treat preview enthusiasm as an 8.4 reprint.

Is it better than GigaBash?

Different toys. GigaBash is a modern kaiju brawler with its own roster. This remaster is a specific 2002 Toho licensed set. Buy the one whose monsters you actually want.

Should I buy physical or digital?

Physical if you want the E.J. Su sleeve on a shelf. Digital if you want the demo-to-purchase path on Steam or a sale later.

When will this page become a scored review?

After November 3, once campaign length, netcode, and the shop can be measured instead of inferred.
